Recess
Parliament business happens throughout the year, with periods of "recess" (breaks). During recess, there are normally no meetings in the Chamber and no committee meetings. MSPs are usually in their local areas where they carry on work with constituents. They can also continue to submit motions and written parliamentary questions.
Recess dates
The precise dates of recess change each year. Recess dates for the next session of Parliament will be agreed after the Scottish Parliament election in May 2021.
Dissolution
"Dissolution" is the time before an election when MSPs no longer hold office.
The Scottish General Election (Coronavirus) Bill was passed by the Parliament on 23 December 2020. Subject to the Bill receiving Royal Assent, dissolution of the Parliament takes place on 5 May 2021, the day before the Scottish Parliament election on 6 May 2021.
